The 2024 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards are currently in full swing, and young fans have already seen some of their favorites take home the iconic orange blimps. A few famous faces popped in during the ceremony to promote their highly-anticipated projects, including the cast of Transformers One. Chris Hemsworth, Keegan-Michael Key, and Brian Tyree Henry came together to share a clip from the first fully-animated Transformers movie in nearly 40 years. The movie recently got a standing ovation at the Annecy Film Festival and fans are excited to learn more at the movie's upcoming San Diego Comic-Con panel.

"Hello, Kids' Choice Awards," Hemsworth begins. "Greetings from the cast of Transformers One," Key adds. "Before we roll out our never-before-seen look at the movie," Henry chimed in. "We wanna give a special shoutout to the greatest yellow superhero of all time," Hemsworth continues. Key and Henry assume Hemsworth is going to say Bumblebee, but the Marvel star ends up saying Nickelodeon icon, Spongebob Squarepants. You can check out their intro followed by the Transformers One clip below:

Set on Cybertron, Transformers One is the untold origin story of a young Optimus Prime and Megatron. Before they transformed into sworn enemies as the leaders of warring robot factions -- the Autobots and Decepticons -- they were brothers-in-arms Orion Pax (Hemsworth) and D-16 (Henry), who changed the fate of their planet forever. While working waste management in the bowels of Cybertron, Orion and D-16 meet workers B-127 (Key), a.k.a. Bumblebee, and Ariel (Scarlett Johansson), a.k.a. Elita-1, before embarking on a dangerous journey to the planet's surface world.

The star-studded voice cast includes Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, Steve Buscemi (Transformers: The Last Knight) in an undisclosed villain role, and Laurence Fisburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion -- sworn protector of Vector Sigma, the mega-computer at the heart of Cybertron -- who unlocks the Transformers' full potential, giving the 'bots the ability to transform. The new movie comes from Paramount Animation (The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run), Hasbro Entertainment (Transformers: EarthSpark), and New Republic Pictures (The Tiger's Apprentice).

"We did our take on the origin, which is still staying true to the lore of Transformers," director Josh Cooley told ComicBook of the first-ever CG-animated Transformers movie, adding that Optimus Prime's origin story is "something we've never seen before on screen." "I wouldn't say that this is a direct prequel to anything that's been done with live-action ones," the director added. "But it's definitely its own story as well."

Transformers One opens only in theaters on September 20th.

Hell House 5 Teaser Released, Release Window Revealed https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hell-house-5-lineage-trailer-release-date-shudder/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 22:37:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt fb0b8bbd-0350-4373-adb6-bcb2b444a71f

The power of social media is mighty. The filmmakers behind the Hell House LLC franchise have announced the mega-viral property is preparing to release its fifth film, Hell House LLC: Lineage. Not only did the filmmakers announce the existence of the film, but they also revealed the first teaser to it as well as its release window. First shared by Bloody Disgusting, Hell House LLC: Lineage will see release on Shudder next October.

In the teaser, Lineage appears that it may both a prequel and sequel, much like the previous entry in the franchise--Hell House LLC: The Carmichael Manor. Invoking the writings of Robert Frost, the minute-long snippet teases a new haunted house with a new family. See the teaser for yourself below.

How many more Hell House LLC movies will there be?

When we spoke with Hell House LLC helmer Stephen Cognetti last fall, he teased future entries in the franchise despite not thinking of them ahead of the time.

"No, I don't think that far ahead. I write movie-to-movie," Cognetti told ComicBook."I shot a film in 2021 that has not come out yet, which is just a good old fashioned haunted house story. That has been in post-production for two years, and in that time waiting for that film to get completed, I brought back the Hell House idea and wrote Hell House LLC: The Carmichael Manor."

"If I do another Hell House film, I know where I want to go and I kind of tease that at the end of the credits," the director added. "I just don't know if that's what's going to be next. It could be something Hell House, or it could be something completely separate. I don't know yet."

The first three Hell House LLC movies can be seen streaming on Tubi while the fourth, Hell House LLC: The Carmichael Manor is now streaming on Shudder. Though the exact date has yet to be set, Hell House LLC: Lineage will hit Shudder sometime October 2025.

Saltburn's Emerald Fennell to Direct New Adaptation of Classic Novel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/saltburns-emerald-fennell-to-direct-new-adaptation-of-classic-novel-wuthering-heights/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 22:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 52b98b59-b66b-4c26-bd86-932df44b9631

Back in 2021, Emerald Fennell won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, and she made waves again last year after her second feature film, Saltburn, became a divisive awards season contender. Fennell, who is also an actor known for playing Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown and Midge in Barbie, is currently eying her next project. The director took to Twitter yesterday to reveal she will be directing an adaptation of the classic Gothic romance, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bront?.

Fennell shared cover artwork by Katie Buckley that teases a new Wuthering Heights adaptation with, "A film by Emerald Fennell" at the bottom. According to Deadline, the project will reunite Fennell with studio MRC after collaborating on Saltburn. However, it is currently unclear who will distribute the project. There also hasn't been any casting news. The tagline in the shared artwork reads, "Be With Me Always. Take Any Form. Drive Me Mad." You can check out the image in the post below:

In Saltburn, Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family's sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten. The ensemble cast also includes Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe, Carey Mulligan, Paul Rhys, Lolly Adefope, Ewan Mitchell, and Reece Shearsmith.

"My favorite thing in general is sympathy for the devil," Fennell said of the film in an interview with Vanity Fair. "The sorts of people that we can't stand, the sorts of people who are abhorrent--if we can love them, if we can fall in love with these people, if we can understand why this is so alluring, in spite of its palpable cruelty and unfairness and sort of strangeness, if we all want to be there too, I think that's just such an interesting dynamic."

"He's just so compelling. He's got a kind of sex appeal and a vulnerability and a physical presence and a sort of darkness, or he can at least communicate these things in a way that is very rare," Fennell added of Keoghan. "[We were] holding hands and jumping off a cliff, because a lot of the time we were looking to make something that is sort of visceral and surprising and dark and sexy, and that takes a lot of commitment."

Stay tuned for more updates about Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Marvel Studios SDCC 2024 Panel Start Time, Length Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-studios-sdcc-2024-panel-start-time-length-revealed-kevin-feige/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:16:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 13001506-7e70-4286-99ee-7fde1b359642

Marvel Studios massive San Diego Comic-Con panel has an official time. On Saturday July 27 at 6pm PT, fans will get a preview of what's next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios will be up there to unpack all the announcements and reveals for San Diego Comic-Con's biggest panel of the weekend. Fans have been expecting some pretty big moves from Marvel after some of the shuffling earlier this year. A lot of projects got pushed to 2025 and beyond. There's a new director for Avengers 5 to announce and possibly new castings to be unveiled. So, Feige and company are going to have to hit the ground running.

One interesting fact headed into the big Marvel panel is that Feige will be pulling double duty headed into this event. On Friday night, the Marvel Studios head will be a part of a panel with Marvel Comics bigwig CB Cebulski to talk about the publishing side of the company. Expect some big comics news during that as well. This week already brought Agatha All Along's trailer and a teaser for Captain America: Brave New World. Before this week, both of those clips would have been locks for the San Diego stage. Now, some fans are wondering what will take their place. So, there are probably going to be some surprises in-store for people who tune-in for the MCU showcase.

Fantastic Four To Have Major Comic-Con Presence

Fantastic Four begins filming even sooner than we imagined.

Fantastic Four is already making its presence felt in San Diego. Near the convention center, there are already banners touting the Future Foundation. There are little teases for The Fantastic Four's characters on light posts as well. It's no secret that Marvel Studios is excited for Matt Shakman's take on the iconic family. No one might be more pumped than Kevin Feige himself. He joined The Official Marvel Podcast to talk about 2025's big summer blockbuster.

"Our director, Matt Shakman has already moved to London, and we start filming at the end of July. Funny story, we start shooting the Monday after Comic-Con," Feige told the podcast. "We start filming the day after on Fantastic Four. I'm extremely excited, because those characters are mainstays, are legendary pillars of the Marvel Universe that we've never gotten to play with or explore in any significant way apart from [Doctor Strange in the] Multiverse of Madness and a few fun teases before, in the way we're doing that film. So, I'm extremely excited."

"It is a period film, and there was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a 4 symbol. There was a cityscape in that image," Feige smirked. "There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn't look exactly like the New York that we know or the New York that existed in the 60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I'll say..."

Despicable Me and Minions Franchise Passes Huge Box Office Milestone https://comicbook.com/movies/news/despicable-me-and-minions-franchise-passes-huge-box-office-milestone/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 17:58:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7b09503a-6358-427b-95b1-becb5bcc556b

Despicable Me 4 hit theaters last week, and not only did it have a strong start at the box office in its first week, but it made $120 million by the time the holiday weekend was over. The animated film is now in its second weekend in theaters, and it's still going strong. In fact, it looks like it will probably beat the horror film Longlegs to land in first place at the box office yet again. The movie's success at the box office has allowed the Despicable Me and Minions franchise to reach a huge milestone. The movies have surpassed a total of $5 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing animated franchise in history.

Despicable Me 4 is expected to close out the weekend strong, bringing its global total to $441 million. According to Box Office Mojo, the first Despicable Me earned $543,239,815 worldwide, Despicable Me 2 earned $970,766,005 worldwide, and Despicable Me 3 earned $1,034,799,409. As for the Minion films, Minions made $1,159,398,397 worldwide and Minions: The Rise of Gru made $940,203,765 worldwide. Domestically, the Despicable Me and Minions movies are the 10th highest-grossing franchise of all time.

Gru and his family are back for Despicable Me 4.

You can read Illumination's description of Despicable Me 4 here: "Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1 billion worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Oscar(R) nominee Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Oscar(R) nominee Kristen Wiig) and their girls -Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan)-welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad.

Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Emmy winner Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run.

The film features fresh new characters voiced by Joey King (Bullet Train), Emmy winner Stephen Colbert (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), and Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live). Pierre Coffin returns as the iconic voice of the Minions and Oscar(R) nominee Steve Coogan returns as Silas Ramsbottom.

Packed with non-stop action and filled with Illumination's signature subversive humor, Despicable Me 4 is directed by a co-creator of the Minions, Oscar(R) nominee Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets), and is produced by Illumination's visionary founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Brett Hoffman (executive producer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minions: The Rise of Gru). The film is co-directed by Patrick Delage (animation director Sing 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2), and the screenplay is by the Emmy-winning creator of White Lotus, Mike White, and the veteran writer of every Despicable Me film, Ken Daurio."

Despicable Me 4 is now playing in theaters.

Despicable Me 4 Holds Box Office Lead, Longlegs Stuns https://comicbook.com/movies/news/despicable-me-4-longlegs-box-office-inside-out-2/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 16:36:00 +0000 Aaron Perine cd08a1df-6194-48a4-bdac-49e7cf63cbf4

Despicable Me 4 is still number one at box office and Longlegs is gaining in a stunning opening weekend. Universal's animated franchise is picking up where Inside Out 2 left off. The Minions are poised to rake in another $44 million this weekend domestically. That would push Despicable Me 4 to $210 million on this side of the pond. Impressively, this latest update actually moved the Illumination franchise up past $5 billion worldwide. This summer, a lot of the big successes have been animated features. Despite a lengthy run, people are still making trips back to the theater for Inside Out 2. That could be a massive story coming out of a strange summer at the blockbuster.

Longlegs is the story of the weekend though. Osgood Perkins' little horror movie that could has been the talk of film Twitter for days now. With under $3 million to its budget, Longlegs is poised to bring in as much as $22 million during its opening weekend. Neon and A24 have to be thrilled with this development. $9 million would have been a tremendous start for this film, but to double it up with relatve ease? That's something else entirely. It's been a boom season for Neon as Immaculate notched a studio record with $5.3 million for the Sydney Sweeney-starrer. We'll have to see if Longlegs can carry this momentum through the weekend.

How Good Is Longlegs?

With the Internet rallying around the smaller-budget Horror movie, opinions are starting to circulate all over. ComicBook's Patrick Cavanaugh reviewed Longlegs for the site. In his review, he was very impressed with Osgood Perkins' latest effort. He gave the movie 4 starts out of 5. In a year with promising Horror contenders, Longlegs might be the favorite with a few months to go!

"With Longlegs, Perkins continues his trend of delivering entirely singular visions of terror, which started with The Blackcoat's Daughter and continued with I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and Gretel & Hansel," Cavanaugh argued. "The marketing campaign is bolstering that this movie could quite literally kill you with how scary it is, and while most of us will live to see the movie and tell the tale, what you've witnessed isn't something you're likely to shake off anytime soon."

He adds, "Even if the ultimate resolution of the story doesn't fully live up to the breadcrumbs the first two acts of the film set up, knowing that such an unconventional, ambitious, and uncompromising experience that could fall under the umbrella of any generic murder mystery feels like nothing short of a triumph."

Deadpool & Wolverine Director Reveals What Part of Making Sequel Was Most Fun https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-shawn-levy-ryan-reynolds-fun-making-sequel-mcu/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 14:47:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 37f70374-4a5f-4f99-8ef7-a5ea365eed2e

Deadpool & Wolverine's director revealed what ended up being the most fun during the movie. Shawn Levy knows people love the slight gore and bad words in a Deadpool film. But, the filmmaker told The Finanaical Times that "self-awareness" is the most fun while filming the sequel. A lot has been said on social media about Disney possibly changing the movie and making the tone different from the first two Deadpool films. (Early reactions to footage from fans has quickly disproved this notion.) But, with that irreverent tone still clearly rolling along, the ability to critique anything and everything in the MCU and beyond. Levy thinks that freedom is something that sets these movies apart from other superhero entries.

"People think of the R rating, the very foul language and audacious violence, but what's really the most fun about making Deadpool is the self-awareness," Levy muses. "He is literally turning and talking to the audience and commenting on culture, Hollywood and the movie itself. That opens up lanes of comedy that are a blast because you get to talk shit about everything."

"Male friendship is one of the central themes of Deadpool & Wolverine -- the question of how grown men connect, bond, communicate," he added. "And if you're Deadpool and Wolverine, sometimes it's through stabbings."

Deadpool & Wolverine Ended Up Hinging On Hugh Jackman

Deadpool 3 has been in the works for a long time now. Originally, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy couldn't quite crack the story. But, the duo ended up getting saved by Hugh Jackman deciding to come back as Wolverine. From there, everything actually started clicking into place. During a recent stop on the press tour, Reynolds recounted the story of how long it took to get to Deadpool & Wolverine. Apparently, Logan was the secret sauce that made the movie work. Kevin Feige heard that Jackman asked to come back and approved the idea almost immediately. (All he wanted was Wolverine in the yellow suit apparently.)

"I had met Kevin Feige six years ago to discuss this, and the first thing I said to him, 'I just want to make Wolverine and Deadpool together. I just want these two together on screen.' At the time, Kevin said, 'Forget it. It's never going to happen,'" Reynolds shared. "And I said, 'Okay, that's fine.' As we marched inexorably forward, Shawn and I were coming up with different pitches and different ideas, and we pitched Marvel everything you could imagine -- little movies, big movies, anything -- and it wasn't working out."

"And then one day, we were on our last pitch. We were about to say to Kevin Feige, 'I think we're going to walk away and we'll come back later, maybe in a couple years, when we have a better sense of things.' And Hugh happened to call me," The star continued. "Shawn and I just pivoted in the middle of our pitch to Kevin and said, 'Look, this thing just happened. It seems kind of miraculous. Hugh called me, what do you say?' And for some reason, Kevin immediately said yes."

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige Confirmed for Surprising SDCC Panel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-studios-kevin-feige-confirmed-sdcc-panel/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 03:11:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a313dd67-dc50-4d1a-ad38-8ab0ec5813be

In the eyes of many fans, Marvel Studios has become synonymous with San Diego Comic-Con, showing up at the annual event to announce new movies and television shows to great fanfare. The studio is already confirmed to be returning to the convention's iconic Hall H panel room, but as it turns out, that won't be the only panel Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige appears in. Based on a recent update to San Diego Comic-Con's panel schedule, Feige is confirmed to be appearing on Marvel Comics' "Marvel Fanfare" panel, which will occur in Room 6DE on Friday, July 26th. The panel will be a discussion between Feige, who also serves as the the CCO of all of Marvel, and Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.

"Marvel masters collide in an unprecedented meeting of page and screen!" the official panel description reads. "Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski and Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige discuss their mutual love for all things Marvel Comics along with some special surprise creators. With decades of creative storytelling at the House of Ideas between them, there will be no shortage of insider insights and unheard comic book anecdotes that you can't afford to miss. And if that wasn't enough... following the discussion, fans will receive an exclusive giveaway comic!"

What Is Marvel Bringing to San Diego Comic-Con 2024?

With the trailers for Marvel's next theatrical and Disney+ releases, Captain America: Brave New World and Agatha All Along, dropping earlier this week, there's no telling what else they might bring to their presentation. Other projects that are on the horizon and have begun filming include Thunderbolts*, Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and Wonder Man. The studio's highly-anticipated reboot of The Fantastic Four is scheduled to begin production in the days after San Diego Comic-Con.

"Our director, Matt Shakman has already moved to London, and we start filming at the end of July," Feige revealed in an interview last month. "Funny story, we start shooting the Monday after Comic-Con. We start filming the day after on The Fantastic Four.

Captain America: Brave New World Star Giancarlo Esposito Reacts To Trailer https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-star-giancarlo-esposito-reacts-to-trailer/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 00:54:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak d0161c19-50b1-40de-89e3-0cf8bf293af3

Captain America: Brave New World is finally hitting theaters next year, and the film's first trailer hit the Internet earlier today. The footage shows Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson suiting up as the new Captain America while Star Wars and Indiana Jones legend Harrison Ford takes over as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross who is now the President of the United States. You can also glimpse Giancarlo Esposito in the trailer as a villain who was added to the production during reshoots. While some believe the Breaking Bad alum is playing George Washington "G.W." Bridge, his role has not been officially confirmed. However, Esposito did take to Twitter today to celebrate the trailer release.

"Honored to be part of the MCU, let's go! ???," Esposito wrote in response to the trailer. You can view the tweet below:

What Is Captain America: Brave New World About?

Captain America: Brave New World will follow the new adventures of Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie) following the events of The Falcon and Winter Soldier. The film will also star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Shira Haas as Sabra. Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, and Rosa Salazar have been cast in currently undisclosed roles. Giancarlo Esposito was also added to the cast as an unknown villain during reshoots.

Captain America: Brave New World wrapped principal photography before the WGA and SAG strikes last year, but the film's post-production was delayed. In December, Matthew Orton (Moon Knight) was hired to work on the new pages. Though reshoots once meant a film was performing poorly in test screenings, Marvel Studios has always scheduled additional photography to clarify questions that come up with test audiences.

"'Reshoots' was a bad word. 'Oh this movie's in reshoots, there must be a problem,'" Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said of the process.

However, it's not exactly common for a film to add a new villain played by a big actor this late in the process. It seems likely that Esposito is eventually getting his own series, but is being introduced in Cap 4. We can only hope this is a positive for the production.

Stay tuned for more updates about Captain America: Brave New World, which is currently scheduled to be released on February 14, 2025.

The Fantastic Four's Paul Walter Hauser Teases Marvel Comics Research https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/the-fantastic-fours-paul-walter-hauser-teases-marvel-comics-research/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 23:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7ee5a9b8-fcef-4a2a-a122-80a448506faa

Marvel Studios' long-awaited The Fantastic Four film is set for a 2025 release, and the movie has a stacked cast. It was announced earlier this year that the film's core four will be played by Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing). The film is also set to feature Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, and John Malkovich and Natasha Lyonne in unknown roles. Turns out, Malkovich and Lyonne aren't the only stars whose parts are being kept under wraps. Emmy-winner Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird, Inside Out 2) is also in the film, and he recently spoke to Variety about prepping for his Marvel role.

"I have not dipped my toes into [Mike Batlan's Deliver Me From Nowhere] yet because before I do that, I'll be doing this film with Mark Wahlberg called Balls Up, and then after that, I'll be doing Fantastic Four for Marvel," Hauser shared. "So I'm mostly focused on those two right now. But once I start wrapping Balls Up in late summer, that's when I'm going to get heavy into Batlan and dive into that. If I prep too much now I'll probably try to cement choices and believe I have a handle on the character. And you never have a handle on the character until you basically wrap."

"Pre-production for me has been reading comic books and reading the screenplay," he added of The Fantastic Four. "A lot of it is assessing where I fit into that story and how to best utilize my time in it. You don't want to make choices or do things that are redundant in a film. It's important to know what the film is and what everyone's jobs are so that you're bringing your own unique take to something. That was incredibly important in BlacKkKlansmen. I was playing one of a half dozen racist idiots in the film, and you have to bring your own racist idiot to the table. It can't just be everybody else's. Whenever I'm in an ensemble, I'm trying to figure out how to be unique or specific without being distracting."

"It's so fun, man," Hauser added of reading comics. "I didn't really read Fantastic Four when I was a kid. I was very Batman-centric. But reading the Fantastic Four comics has been a blast. I love it."

In a new conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor revealed why he was initially hesitant to take the role.

"Don't think that didn't weigh in as I was deciding whether or not to take the job," Hauser explained. "That movie has not fully been nailed just yet ... But I really do think the combination of the screenplay, and the department heads that are working on the film, and that classy cast of really exciting actors - some of them known for a long time, and some of them having a moment right now - [make me feel that] this movie is special, and it was something I wanted to be a part of."

The Hunger Games: House of the Dragon Star Addresses Young Haymitch Fancasts https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-hunger-games-house-of-the-dragon-tom-glynn-carney-young-haymitch-fancasts/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 23:08:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 07de8483-2640-40ac-81a6-e2d0b39076e5

Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games franchise is getting a new story, with a new book and film titled Sunrise on the Reaping announced to massive fanfare earlier this summer. The new prequel is expected to build on existing franchise lore surrounding the Fiftieth Hunger Games, and fans have assumed that the games' victor, a young Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson in the movies), will factor in some way. There have already been plenty of fan campaigns over who should take on the role of Haymitch, and one of those contenders is breaking his silence on the possibility. In a recent interview with Vestal, House of the Dragon star Tom Glynn-Carney addressed fans wanting him to play Haymitch in the Sunrise on the Reaping movie, and hinted that he is more than willing to take on the role.

"No way, that's the first I've heard of it!" Glynn-Carney revealed. "But I'm incredibly flattered that people would like to see me on screen again. If all goes well, I'll fight for my life in the Hunger Games!"

What Is the New Hunger Games Movie About?

Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

"With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume's idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,'" Collins said in a statement announcing the book. "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."

Will There Be More Hunger Games Movies?

In addition to the story of Haymitch's Hunger Games, fans have also hoped to one day get a prequel surrounding Finnick Odair, who won the 65th Hunger Games and became a pivotal and tragic part of the next Quarter Quell. Collins has repeatedly stated that her Hunger Games entries are a way for her to "examine" a real-world topic, with franchise director Francis Lawrence indicating that another film installment wouldn't happen without Collins having a specific narrative in mind.

"If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem -- whether that's with new people [or] familiar characters [like] Finnick, Haymitch, whoever -- I'd be really interested in looking at it and being a part of it," Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly in an interview last year. "But I don't have any pull of just going, 'I would love to do Finnick's games.' He's a great character, but what's the thematic underpinnings that make it worth telling and relevant?"

Sunrise on the Reaping will be released wherever books are sold on March 18, 2025, followed by the movie adaptation on November 20, 2026.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Star Bronson Pinchot Recalls Sudden Fame From First Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/beverly-hills-cop-axel-f-star-bronson-pinchot-recalls-sudden-fame-from-first-movie/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 22:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 76ba98a5-751d-4ab8-a016-0a20d448e58d

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is now streaming on Netflix, and the fourth installment to the Eddie Murphy-led franchise is now the streamer's most-watched movie premiere of the year. While fans are delighted to see Murphy back as Axel Foley, the character he first played in 1984, he's not the only familiar face from the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. In fact, you'll spot a handful of returning stars, including Bronson Pinchot, who played Serge in Beverly Hills Cop and Beverly Hills Cop III. The character was first introduced in the first film's art gallery scene, and Pinchot instantly became recognized for his "lemon twist" line. During a recent chat with ComicBook, Pinchot reflected on his sudden fame from the first film, and what it was like to get recognized 40 years ago.

"Five minutes after the movie came out, I was having a little fruit salad at this place and there's this kind of leather, biker guy and his girlfriend, they'd obviously been up all night," Pinchot began. "We were the only three people in the place. And I do remember his name because, he looks over at me all haggard and he goes, 'Hey, do the accent.' Isn't that endearing? Like, don't you want to do it? So I said, 'You know, I think I'm just gonna eat my fruit salad.' So there's this ghastly long pause and then his girlfriend whose back was to me, lots of pimples on her back. She goes, 'Maybe he thinks he's too good for you, Vinny.' Vinny says to her, not to me, 'Well, then maybe I'll have to kill him.'"

"My eye glides over to the young terrified woman who's behind the cash register and she pantomimes, 'Do you want me to call the police?' I don't know why I said no, but I said no. So ever so slowly ... like when you're attacked by a bobcat ... I get into my Jeep, Vinny gets into his car and waits till I get up in the hills and then tries to run me off the road because I said I wouldn't do it. So I just do it now!"

"The reason that you see people like nowadays if you see any of this crappy footage - poor Ben Affleck. He's walking to his car. He's probably just gone to go get some Metamucil ... there's a paparazzo standing in his car going, 'Hey, Ben, how about you and Jen?' And he's already got his face like, 'I've done this for 40 years. I'm not going to say anything. I'm just gonna suffer.' ... And he's had all this practice. I'm 25 years old, sleeping on the floor. No money. I mean, no money, no food, and all of a sudden I'm everywhere, and this guy Vinny is gonna kill me for not doing the accent. So it's a curve, it's a learning curve."

"The moment that it happened, and I'll never forget it," he added when asked the moment he knew his life had changed from Beverly Hills Cop. "I'm not exaggerating ... I was so poor, I couldn't even afford a magazine. So somebody calls me up, the movie had been out for six minutes, and somebody called me up and said, 'You gotta go see Newsweek.' And I said, 'Well, I can't go, I can't afford' ... What is it? 75 cents? They said, 'Go pick up a copy.' So I walked from my crappy apartment in Hollywood ... Open Newsweek. It says something like, 'A singular, unknown actor, does this thing.' And so I'm like, 'Oh, that's nice.' I'm walking home ... baking under the sun, not a tree for a mile in any direction. And there's a car coming toward me on the asphalt, but they're screaming and then they pull up onto the sidewalk."

"And they stopped five inches from me and I think, 'I'm going to die. They're all on meth,'" he recalled. "And instead, they all piled out and started to jump up and down and talk about Serge, and the movie had been out three minutes. It's funny because, you know, there's no comedy writer better than fate. There it was in a nutshell. It was like, you could die or you could get a hug, and you'll never know again once you tickle people's funny bones. So they drove onto the sidewalk, they were just excited, they didn't want me to get away."

Captain America: Brave New World Removed Key Footage From CinemaCon https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-4-footage-fight-scene-avengers-cinemacon/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 21:51:00 +0000 Brandon Davis bd2fc317-12c6-405c-9355-00a6e86e35bd

Captain America: Brave New World released its first official teaser trailer on Friday morning, drumming up quite a response from Marvel fans looking forward to the next adventure with Sam Wilson. As exciting as the new trailer is, offering a gritty, grounded tone which is immediately reminiscent of the widely acclaimed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there is more footage which Marvel Studios has shown off which was removed from this trailer. Yes, an entire movie's worth of footage exists, but Marvel previously rolled out more footage from the fourth Cap movie and it only makes today's trailer that much more exciting.

Much of the footage in the first teaser trailer was featured at CinemaCon. However, much of what was featured at CinemaCon was not featured in the teaser. The biggest change is the removal of a line of dialogue from Harrison Ford's President Ross. In his meeting with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. the President of the United States tells him, "I want Captain America to help me rebuild the Avengers." This leads to a dialogue similar to that seen in the trailer, where Sam questions what will happen if he doesn't agree with the President's orders.

The footage at CinemaCon went on to see the President address a room full of soldiers and world leaders. During his speech, music started to play which triggered a Winter Soldier-like brainwashing to activate Isaiah Bradley as an assassin. A shortened version of the moment is featured in the teaser trailer. This leads to a shootout and brawl, culminating in Isaiah tossing a table across a room with ease and leaping out of the building through a glass window. Essentially, the footage shown as CinemaCon was from the same scenes as many early sequences in the now-released teaser trailer but thoroughly extended versions with almost entire scenes playing out rather than quickly edited bits for the trailer. The tone of the CinemaCon footage was similar to that of the teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer, however, did feature several new pieces of footage and reveals which were not included or hinted at back in April's CinemaCon presentation from Marvel Studios and Disney. Not only was the Red Hulk revealed for the first time in the final moments of the teaser trailer but the footage showed a major connection to 2021's Eternals movie. Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres, now officially suited up as the Falcon to fulfill his comic book destiny, are seen flying over the Indian Ocean. More specifically, they are engaged in a battle around the partially emerged corpse a Tiamut, the Celestial being which had its apocalyptic birth halted in Eternals. Furthermore, all of the clips with Giancarlo Esposito's new and mysterious character were not featured during CinemaCon, as his addition to the film is a product of reshoot efforts throughout 2024.

Captain America: Brave New World Trailer Sees MCU Finally Acknowledge Eternals https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-trailer-sees-mcu-finally-acknowledge-eternals/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 21:34:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 99b004f2-4ce9-4a8d-a6c7-a6d2ebe876ca

After years of Marvel fans and critics alike wondering if Tiamut's emergence in the middle of the ocean was ever going to be more than a digital blurb on a computer screen in an episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the answer is finally, "Yes!" The first official teaser trailer for Captain America: Brave New World tied Sam Wilson's first solo outing to the major moment from the climax of Eternals which the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely ignored. Rumors have long floated around social media that the fourth Captain America movie would incorporate the unborn Celestial with footage now revealing the being's partially-emerged corpse to truly be featured.

Late in the first official teaser for Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres are seen flying over the Indian Ocean. This is where Tiamut, the Celestial which was growing inside of the Earth until the Eternals prevented his world-ending emergence, has his rocky corpses sticking out of the ocean. Anthony Mackie's Sam and Danny Ramirez's Joaquin are seen zipping through the air around parts of Tiamut's corpse, seemingly engaged in some sort of dog fight in the air. It is unclear what type of material Tiamut turned into when life left the Celestial's body but an entire colony was made out of just the head of Celestial in space in the form of Knowhere. It is safe to assume there is a chance this material is highly valiuable.

If the makeup of Tiamut's body itself is not of great value, the body might also serve as a new landmass. Countries might be trying to literally plant flags in this new mass, especially as politics are playing a part in the new Cap movie and Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross is not only the Red Hulk but also the President of the United States.

Tiamut was mentioned in the corner of a website seen on Jen Walters' computer screen in an episode of She-Hulk. Other than that, this is the first time a Marvel Studios project has acknowledged the massive dead Celestial since Eternals released in November of 2021.

Kids Choice Awards Adds Margot Robbie & Timothée Chalamet https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/kids-choice-awards-margot-robbie-timothee-chalamet-2024/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 21:14:00 +0000 Aaron Perine ddf8f949-2a95-4b14-9657-468afbec1a96

Kids Choice Awards 2024 will have Margot Robbie and Timoth?e Chalamet in the building. Live from Bikini Bottom, Nickelodeon's long-running kids awards show will see the stars of Barbie and Dune grace the event. This year's event will see over 50 first-time nominees looking for an orange blimp. Variety reported that Robbie and Chalamet were going to make an appearance. At 8pm tomorrow, all these stars will converge on the Pauley Pavilion for a slime-filled show. SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star are on the mic to host the Kids Choice Awards 2024. (That means voice actors Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke get their day in sun after a stellar call of this year's Super Bowl game.) What a scene it will be.

But, Barbie and Paul Atreides won't be having all the fun. Super Mario Bros. Movie star Jack Black will be in attendance as well. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse voice actor, Shameik Moore. They are a part of a long list of celebrities, including Anna Kendrick, Rene? Rapp, Jelly Roll and Good Burger 2s Kenan Thompson anKeCal Mitchell. WNBA phenom Caitlin Clark will be up for an award as well Travis Kelce, Ryan Gosling, Post Malone, Patrick Mahomes, Olivia, Rodrigo, Ryan, Reynolds, Paul Rudd, Zoe Saldana, Justin, Timberlake, Zendaya, and of course, one Taylor Swift. Things are shaping up to be absolutely massive at the Kids Choice Awards.

As we mentioned up above SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star are behind the microphone for a toast for hosting duties this time around. Before kids choice awards 2024 gets rolling, ComicBook had a chance to catch up with Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke to talk about the upcoming event. In our conversation, both voice actors credited the longevity of SpongeBob for such an opportunity even happening. Even as Times in taste change among younger audiences, one thing has remained, the same, they still love the little yellow sponge and all of his friends. You can tell by listening to Kenny and his co-star, they do too.

"The secret to the endurance of the characters is who they are as characters and how they interact with one another as characters,' the duo told ComicBook. "Individually, Spongebob and Patrick are cool but when you put them together, then you get a comedy team happening in the classic sense like Laurel and Hardy. That's what we aspired to emulate anyway."

Captain America: Brave New World Trailer Teases Marvel's New Falcon https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-trailer-new-falcon-joaquin-torres-mcu/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 21:06:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 3036c7b0-cea7-4ee8-beb5-75dc4b88406b

The first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World introduces fans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Falcon. The mantle of Falcon was previously held by Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), but as the ending of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier displayed, Sam Wilson is officially Captain America, replacing the retired Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Of course, this means the role of Falcon is up for grabs, but though fans may not have realized it at the time, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier already introduced the character who will pick up Sam Wilson's wings. Now, we get to see the Falcon soar with Captain America in the Brave New World trailer.

In the final moments of the Captain America: Brave New World trailer, Sam Wilson is shown in an aerial battle with some army jets. After he takes one out and passes through a set of clouds, he comes through the clouds next to another hero with matching wings. Though this person's identity is not revealed, we can assume that it's Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), who helped Sam out in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If that isn't proof enough, Marvel has also officially confirmed Ramirez as Falcon in the Captain America: Brave New World synopsis.

"The trailer also features a few familiar faces: Danny Ramirez returns as former Air Force lieutenant Joaquin Torres, who's picked up Sam's old wings and taken on the role of Falcon," the synopsis reads.

After the trailer for Captain America: Brave New World wrapped up, the stinger showed off Harrison Ford's Red Hulk. All we see is a look at Red Hulk from the ground up, with his upper body and legs exposed through ripped clothing. Red Hulk appears to either swat Captain America's shield to the ground, or grab it mid-air and sling it to the ground. It's an impressive display for sure, and teases an inevitable confrontation between Red Hulk and Captain America.

"What is the Red Hulk?" Ford asked ComicBook during a chat in support of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023. After a brief explainer, Ford turned it around on his co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, blaming her for not telling him about the character's history. When asked if fans can expect to see Red Hulk's first live-action appearance in Brave New World, Ford added that "it may or it may not" be included.

Captain America: Brave New World will also star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres / Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns / The Leader, Harrison Ford as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Shira Haas as Sabra. Xosha Roquemore, Rosa Salazar, and Giancarlo Esposito have been cast in currently-unknown roles, with Esposito recently being added to the film in reshoots. Captain America: Brave New World is directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox, Luce), with a script from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman, as well as Dalan Musson and Matthew Orton.

"I am so happy to be in the MCU," Esposito told ComicBook in a recent exclusive interview. "I'm happy that you don't know what I'm doing there and I'm happy that I probably don't know what I'm doing there, but I'm happy to be there and you're going to see it soon."

Captain America: Brave New World is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Inside Out 2 Passes Frozen, 3rd Highest-Grossing Animated Film https://comicbook.com/movies/news/inside-out-2-box-office-frozen-3rd-highest-grossing-animated-film-pixar/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 20:22:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 2e73a71b-2a36-4108-896f-69560e7f2b03

Inside Out 2 is now the third-highest grossing animated film ever after passing Frozen at the box office. Pixar's latest has brought in $1.3 billion worldwide. It's tipped over the beloved Disney musical and now has its sights set on The Super Mario Bros. Movie from last year next. (That's going to be a wild task because the Illumination feature raked in $1.36 billion worldwide.) Still, if any movie has a chance at possibly topping Frozen II someday, it's Inside Out 2. The Pixar sequel has become nothing short of a phenomenon at the box office. Despite numerous weeks with strong releases, Inside Out 2 has held strong. (On the way, both this film and Bad Boys: Ride or Die have helped rally the tide in theaters as well.)

Over at Disney, optimism is understandable because Inside Out 2 has it open in certain markets yet. In particular Japan gets their big opening day for the Pixar sequel soon. Disney believes there could be some real wins on the table there win the movie finally premieres. Another bright spot is the fact that some Zoomer audiences are going to re-watch inside out to multiple times. (That's the only way some of these movies end up grossing more than $1 billion, someone's got to be seeing it more than once.) In a sly observation, we could be looking at the first Gen Z nostalgia hit of this cycle. So, batten down the hatches for next year, when Zootopia 2 hits theaters. All in all, you have to believe that Inside Out 2 is a roaring success for Pixar that should give them more momentum headed into 2025.

Inside Out 2 Has Been A Huge W For Pixar

Massive run for Inside Out 2.

- Disney)

Inside Out 2 has been a win, but there was a lot of nervousness around this film, headed into release. It seems like speculation and concern was growing around the Pixar brand with some of the recent releases. A lot of the studios output ended up on Disney+ as the pandemic got started in 2020. Only recently, has Disney made the decision to go back towards the actual releases for these big animated projects. Because of relentless media coverage, public sentiment started to form around the studio's place in the theater landscape. Those concerns are largely history now after Inside Out 2 managed to blow the door off of movie houses.

Pixar studio's chief Pete Docter knew what this movie could be. In an interview with EW, Docter said that original storytelling is still a key tenet of their work. Just because Inside Out 2 ended up being a massive hit like this doesn't mean they're going completely with sequels from here on out. Sure, they will be familiar faces, but also balanced out with original stories that families can really sync their teeth into.

"One thing that I think was maybe slightly misinterpreted was the idea that we have to deliver more of what people know and maybe lean away from the personal. All of that's true to some degree, but I think what we're always trying to do is find what are the universal things that everybody believes, both in terms of concepts and in terms of life experience," Docter argued. "So, for example, I thought [as a kid] my toys came to life. I thought there were monsters that lived in the closet. We're looking for those kinds of big, universal things that people go, 'I already know that it's an original idea, but it's a concept that I had, too.' So it's kind of a sequel in that way. You know what I mean? There's a limited number of those, so they each have to be done in a very unique way through a specific lens. We want to hold onto that, but we want to make sure that they speak widely."

Longlegs Original Soundtrack Coming to Vinyl From Mutant https://comicbook.com/horror/news/longlegs-soundtrack-score-music-vinyl-release-mutant/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 19:29:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 2ecdcce5-b1c8-44e5-8a2d-1f89a368a4cf

Landing in theaters this weekend from filmmaker Oz Perkins is Longlegs, the terrifying horror experience featuring Nicolas Cage as the titular serial killer. The film currently sits at 91% positive on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a number of elements coming together to craft the frightening experience. One key component of the film's effectiveness is the music by Zilgi, which is set to be coming to vinyl through Mutant. Much like the film's visuals, the music is evocative and unconventional, delivering audiences a frightening experience that delivers an experimental atmosphere. You can pre-order the Longlegs Original Soundtrack now before it hits shelves on September 28th.

Mutant describes the release, "Mutant, in conjunction with Milan Records and NEON, is proud to release the premiere physical release of Longlegs (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with music by ZILGI. The album features an original score written by Zilgi for director Osgood Perkins' horrifying new thriller following an FBI agent searching for a deranged serial killer."

"As disturbing and all-consuming as a nightmare, Longlegs required a soundscape as gripping as its onscreen story, prompting Zilgi to craft a palette of dark, foreboding synth work, warped instrumentation, and subliminal sound design elements. Working closely with sound designer and editor Eugenio Battaglia, who contributes two tracks to the album, the resulting soundtrack is unsettling, uncomfortable, and utterly riveting. Zigli has crafted a genuinely terrifying listen that mixes soundscapes, electronics, and discordant rock to create a portal to hell that will stay with you long after the needle leaves the record. Hail Satan. Featuring package design by Greg Ruth and Spencer Hickman."

The movie is described, "FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Nicolas Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family."

Now that the movie is in theaters, fans will be able to witness Cage's intense transformation into the character, which the marketing campaign has cleverly avoided revealing in full. Perkins and Cage previously expressed the approach to keeping audiences in the dark.

"It's driving people towards a freak show at a circus tent," Perkins confirmed with Entertainment Weekly last month. "We've got the thing behind the curtain, and when there's enough people gathered 'round, we're going to pull the curtain."

Cage continued, "It's the equivalent of putting a warning label on a jar of nitroglycerin ... The monster is a highly, highly dangerous substance. The way it's moved, unveiled, deployed has to be treated very carefully. Forget about the movie theater blowing up; the whole city could blow up, nay the country, maybe even the world. He is going to change your reality. Your doors of perception are going to open, and your life is not going to be the same."

Longlegs is in theaters now. You can pre-order the Longlegs Original Soundtrack now before it hits shelves on September 28th.

Alien: Romulus Teases Hall H Panel at SDCC with VHS Sneak Peek https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-teases-hall-h-panel-at-sdcc-with-vhs-sneak-peek/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 19:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak d7650cec-0c9a-4cab-ac75-99ca36c46ac5

It's been seven years since Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant was released in theaters, and this summer will finally see the long-awaited next installment to the franchise. Alien: Romulus is being produced by Scott and directed by Fede ?lvarez, who is best known for helming Evil Dead (2013). The new movie promises to bring the franchise back to its horror roots that began with Alien in 1979. If you're excited about the film and headed to San Diego Comic-Con this month, 20th Century Studios promises a fun Hall H panel. In fact, they shared the details with members of the press by sending a VHS tape featuring a sneak peek.

The VHS kicks off with a news clip from 1979 that shows a regretful dad taking his son to see Alien, which proved to be incredibly scary. The old footage was followed by a trailer, and the new featurette that dropped online yesterday, which saw ?lvarez saying, "The whole idea behind this film was to really take it back to basics and make it a pure horror movie again." The tape also featured a scene that sees the main characters setting off into space, presumably before the Xenomorphs start attacking. Most importantly, the tape reveals that Alien: Romulus' Hall H panel will be kicking off in San Diego on Friday, July, 26th at 5 PM PT.

Thankfully, the Alien: Romulus tape was sent to a ComicBook staff writer with a VCR. You can watch the full sneak peek, recorded off of an old TV, below:

What Is Alien: Romulus About?

- 20th Century Studios)

Alien: Romulus is being billed as more of a spinoff rather than a direct continuation of the Alien franchise and will see a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. ?lvarez has previously opened up about how a deleted scene from James Cameron's Aliens featuring young colonists inspired Romulus' story.

"My first instinct, just to try something different that hasn't been seen before, was to approach it form the angle of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they're not even adults," he said. "I liked this concept of putting people in the front seat of the story who are closer to what the audience is -- not that the audience is young, more that the audience is completely virgin to the realities of space. When the characters are professionals, they know more than you do. But when they're still in their early 20s, they don't know how to operate the f-cking airlock."

He continued, "All their parents probably worked on the same ship when they were kids, and that's how they got to know each other ... There's a lot of history between them because they're the only family they have. They truly act more like surrogate siblings; some of them even lived under the same roof. A lot of the big themes of the movie are about siblinghood and what does that mean? The Romulus of it all, and the bigger plot with Weyland-Yutani, is actually connected to that as well."

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16th.

Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow Score Coming to Vinyl https://comicbook.com/horror/news/sleepy-hollow-tim-burton-movie-score-soundtrack-vinyl-danny-elfman/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 18:22:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh cc19c363-730d-4763-a0fe-d8e320a4f369

Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is one of the most iconic tales of terror in literary history and it's been brought to life in countless ways since 1820. One of the most seminal adaptations of the material is Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, which not only captured all of the spooky atmosphere of the source material, but also injected buckets of blood to take the horror to new heights. In honor of that film's achievements, Waxwork Records is bringing the original score to vinyl for the first time, which features music composed by Burton's frequent collaborator Danny Elfman. You can pre-order Sleepy Hollow Music From The Motion Picture by Danny Elfman now before it hits shelves in August.

Waxworks Records describes the release, "Waxwork Records, in conjunction with Hollywood Records and Paramount Pictures, is thrilled to present Sleepy Hollow Music From The Motion Picture by Danny Elfman for the very first time on vinyl! Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 gothic supernatural horror film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, and Christopher Walken. It is based loosely on Washington Irving's 1820 short story 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.' The plot follows police constable Ichabod Crane (Depp) sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman."

"Danny Elfman is an award-winning American film composer, singer, and songwriter. He has garnered international recognition for composing over 100 feature film scores. Elfman is a longtime collaborator of director Tim Burton having scored such films as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

"Sleepy Hollow stands as one of Elfman's largest orchestral scores and utilizes weighty brass, eerie choral pieces, and unnerving strings. His use of romantic themes cut a calming tone throughout the dark and mysterious gothic fairytale.

"Waxwork Records is proud to present the debut vinyl release of Sleepy Hollow Music From The Motion Picture by Danny Elfman as a deluxe double-LP album. Album features include 180-gram 'Headless Horseman Splatter'-colored vinyl (Translucent Black with Silver Burst and Blood Red & Black Splatter), new artwork by Steven Reeves, heavyweight gatefold jackets with matte-satin coating, and blood red spot UV gloss varnish, and a 12"x12" art print."

Captain America: Brave New World Trailer May Have Revealed the Marvel Movie's True Villain https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-trailer-red-hulk-leader-mcu-marvel-movie-villain/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 18:18:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8e796578-9c27-4f4a-8e89-fa507558f26d

Captain America: Brave New World has a slick new trailer and the true villain of this movie may finally have emerged. While the Internet at large is dissecting that tease of Red Hulk, The Leader creeps into the light. Samuel Sterns is back after appearing in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Tim Blake Nelson is back to bring the villain's machinations into clear view. Sam Wilson is firmly Captain America and dealing with changing times. (Also, some butting heads with President Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross, played by Harrison Ford.) While Cap is busy with all that, it seems like The Leader is pulling the strings from behind-the-curtain. Quite literally in the new trailer, Nelson's baddie is watching some of the action through a window.

Some eagle-eyed fans have noticed The Leader's presence in other portions of the Captain America: Brave New World trailer. Outside of the big meeting that President Ross set up, a telltale set of green hands holds a camera to capture that dramatic frenzy as Isaiah Bradley goes rogue. A bit of Nelson's voice over says, "Global power is shifting, you're just a pawn." But, a lot of folks are wondering, is he talking to Sam Wilson or to the President? There's a bunch of table-setting going on here and with San Diego Comic-Con mere weeks away, maybe some answers are forthcoming.

Earlier this summer, ScreenRant asked Nelson about The Leader and he teased a good explanation about what Samuel Sterns has been up to. "Very excited about it," the actor teased. "I'm headed to Atlanta tomorrow to continue working on that. It's been very exciting to bring back a character from 16 years ago and imagine how he has aged with me and how that has manifested. The Marvel team has come up with a really interesting explanation--revelation, I should say, as to what he's been up to for 16 years and why."

Captain America: Brave New World Resets The Table For The MCU

The Multiverse Saga sets the table for the conflicts on Earth.

The Multiverse Saga has meant a lot of changes for the MCU. Anthony Mackie says that Captain America: Brave New World reshuffles the board for our Earth-based heroes. While Deadpool & Wolverine joyride around the timeline, Sam Wilson and other street-level heroes are going to have their hands full. Mackie told EW that there are major hints about the future direction of those storylines in this movie. A lot of the world powers are getting antsy and that's not usually a good thing.

"This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be," Mackie told the outlet. "I think with these movies, you're getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

"The title implies that there's a new, bigger enemy now; there's a new frontier that we have to conquer," Mackie shared. "From Captain America: The First Avenger to Endgame, the enemy was always good versus bad. Now that we've conquered that, where do we go from here? When the bad guys reappear, in what form are they reappearing? It is a new storyline with new characters, with new beliefs, and it creates a new idea of this new world that we're going into."

Ryan Reynolds' Aviation Gin Announces Super-Limited Wolverine Bottles https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ryan-reynolds-aviation-gin-announces-deadpool-wolverine/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 17:07:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame e4b6f2a9-48de-4925-ac1a-b81c3ff38cfc

It's been a few weeks since Ryan Reynolds's Aviation Gin revealed a first look at their Deadpool-branded bottles, rolled out on Father's Day. Now it's Wolverine's turn -- the Canadian mutant has taken over his own set of bottles, which are available in stores now for a limited time. According to the distillery, the bottles are only available to buy in Florida, California, Texas, New York, and Oregon -- and they'll run you about $25. The extra-limited nature, Aviation says, is basically just Reynolds' way of slighting Hugh Jackman and Wolverine one last time.

The actor is known for coming up with creative and hilarious skits to promote his brand of gin, sometimes even recruiting his Hollywood friends to partake in the madness. Last year's Father's Day introduced Aviation Gin's Vasectomy cocktail, and this year brings the Deadpool and Wolverine vibes to the party.

aviation-gin.jpg

Here's how Aviation explains it: "Encased in a sleek black glass and accented with yellow custom strip stamps and metallic details, the limited-edition bottle is filled with the same perfectly crisp, smooth Aviation American Gin consumers know and love. Serving as the ultimate collector's item, Deadpool and Wolverine fanatics alike can now stock their bar cart with this dynamic duo."

In Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, with the return of Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Aaron Stanford is returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with Jennifer Garner rumored to return as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D'Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine will be released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.

Deadpool & Wolverine's New Teaser Footage Pumps Fans Up https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverines-teaser-footage-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-tva-cassandra-nova-mcu/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 16:46:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 7f0ca891-17b6-4375-b2ac-4f93ae01a5d6

Deadpool & Wolverine rolled out another teaser today with brand-new footage. In the new clip, Wade Wilson is still trying to convince Logan to team-up. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's chemistry is off the charts during these exchanges. In the bar from the other trailers, Deadpool needles Wolverine about his loner schtick. As the two bicker, some shots of Dogpool licking Wade's face happen along with other void footage. Cassandra Nova, the movie's villain says that "boys are so silly." Even the Time Variance Authority's Agent Paradox is in a jubilant mood as the clip continues. There's just a lot of fun being teased during these short 22 minutes.

Adding to the cheeky nature of Deadpool & Wolverine's new teaser is the inclusion of Toni Basil's "Mickey" as the music. (Fun times with 1982 number one pop hits!) Deadpool saying, "Let's give 'em what they came for" feels meta right now with all the various rumors swirling around this film. They talk about Wade Wilson's toupee situation and Logan laughs that everyone can tell it's a hairpiece. Things are basically all smiles in this new clip and real life for these best friends. Deadpool & Wolverine is in the midst of a massive worldwide tour that continues to charm MCU fans who are lucky enough to be in attendance.

As the promotional tour rolls on, Kevin Feige has had some things to say about Deadpool & Wolverine. The MCU architect actually stopped by The Official Marvel Podcast to talk about getting all that Deadpool goodness into this movie. The first reactions from fans who have seen about 30 minutes of the movie say that it keeps the irreverent tone that characterized the first two entries. "We're very proud of it. The entire thing is just as gory and just as foul-mouthed and just as R-Rated as you would expect, but it is also extremely endearing and emotional," Feige smirked. "I think people are going to leave excited to go and watch it again."

"We had nothing to do with the first two extremely successful Deadpool movies. Marvel Studios had nothing to do with those," Feige continued. "So, in a way, we were playing on Ryan's turf. We were playing on somebody else's sandbox. The other way is that they were coming into our sandbox. We wanted to make it unique with the blending of those styles.

He would also praise the entire creative team"It was really, really nice the way Shawn Levy, our director, and Ryan were able to come in and embrace the best of what Ryan had pioneered with Deadpool and what Hugh had pioneered on those early X-Men films and bringing them in a very irreverent way, which people are already starting to piece together based on the trailers and the presence of the Time Variance Authority into our sandbox."

Editors Greg Ng and Graham Fortin on Piecing Together the Madness of Longlegs https://comicbook.com/horror/news/longlegs-interview-editors-greg-ng-graham-fortin-oz-perkins-collaboration-explained/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 16:32:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 4302885b-a594-4153-ac80-44fc6a85f6ae

Filmmaker Oz Perkins might not be a household name, but among genre fans, it's a bit of a different story. Making his directorial debut with The Blackcoat's Daughter, which he then followed with I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and Gretel & Hansel, each of his films up to this point have delivered different flavors of terror. With his new film Longlegs, Perkins explores a new type of narrative for his career, though he has described it as bringing together all of your favorite genre elements into one horrifying ordeal, featuring serial killers, the supernatural, and Satan. To help find a method to the madness, editors Greg Ng and Graham Fortin worked with Perkins to create one of the year's most unnerving horror experiences.

Longlegs is described, "FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Nicolas Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family."

ComicBook caught up with Ng and Fortin to talk about collaborating with Perkins, their approach to the disturbing story, and how to handle Cage's terrifying killer.

(Photo: NEON)

ComicBook: Greg, one thing that I noticed in the production notes is that you described editing a movie as playing with LEGO to a degree. For someone who either is a young family member or is an audience member who doesn't necessarily understand the similarities, could you elaborate on what is so similar about those two activities?

Greg Ng: Editing is playing LEGO with videos and emotions and story. So it's like the director and the production team go out to the LEGO store and they buy a couple of red bricks and find some yellow heads, and then eventually you get this bag of LEGO in which you construct something that the director had set out to do, and you help the director build that LEGO thing.

There's another analogy that we like to talk about, which is editing is like cooking, maybe that's a better analogy. There's the director who wrote up this recipe and goes out there to buy all the ingredients with the crew, and we set out to make beef pot pie, and you get the beef and then you get the thing and then you realize, "Oh, this beef pot pie is turning into a beef Wellington." Or maybe in some cases it might turn into maybe something, just a stew and there's no crust and you're like, "Well, it's still pretty good stew."

I do like that analogy because it's also like you when you're cooking and you're like, "Wow, I forgot that I don't have this ingredient," or, "I went to the store and I forgot the garlic, but I've got garlic powder. Can we use that instead of having to go to this store and put Nicolas Cage in these prosthetics for this one pickup shot?" How did this collaboration with Oz come about? Were you in from early on? Was it a scheduling thing?

Graham Fortin: It came to be basically through the producer Chris Ferguson and Brian Kavanaugh Jones. Both Greg and I have worked with those two for almost 15, no, 10, 12 years now.

Ng: A long time.

Fortin: A long time, which we don't really want to put on paper, though, that number, but it came through them and I've been fortunate enough to work on other projects with Chris Ferguson and Brian. They called me up and they said, "Would you be interested in working on this?" And it went from there. Obviously, being familiar with Oz's work, it was a dream come true to be able to work with him. He's such a big fan of movies. One of the highlights of working with him was just nerding out about old movies in the edit room when we finally got to that stage with him.

What makes working with Oz Perkins as opposed to some of the other collaborators you've worked with, what makes working with him so unique and also along those lines, what even makes Longlegs such a unique project?

Ng: We've been just trying to figure out, what is it? Working with Oz is a pleasurable experience. He's a hilarious guy. I don't know if you've seen any of his interviews elsewhere on the Internet or from before or if you've seen Legally Blonde, but he is a hilarious guy to work around, and he has an extreme depth of knowledge about cinema. I feel like coming in to work with him, I'm always learning something new about, especially old classic cinema and stuff like that.

I feel like his knowledge of cinema and what to expect, he's constantly trying to push the envelope, try something new, collaborate with the whole team, and bring something new to the table. So when we think about Longlegs, it's not necessarily a lot of original ideas in terms of what is it; it's a serial killer. There's satanic elements. It's like Silence of the Lambs and all those things. But what makes it unique is the flavor that the movie has managed to come together when we're following that recipe. There is a beef Wellington or whatever, a pot pie there that is not quite your standard movie.

We used to say it in the edit suite, it's like, what did we call it? We made up a fake French word like "nouveau amour." It has an artistic vibe throughout it, which is, I think, unique to Oz, that it has this Perkins-ism in the tone of the movie. And certainly obviously the cinematography from Andreas Roche and the sound design and everybody's efforts, the production design. They all culminate to give this very unique take on a horror movie. Obviously the performances are amazing as well.

One of the things that I know Oz has specifically talked about and just my initial reaction is the staging of every single frame, the composition of every single frame, the way that the camera moves, the stilted dialogue and performances, everything feels like trying to remember a nightmare. Afterwards, I read that Oz wanted to get that across, and he absolutely got it across. So in the edit, how do you get that across? Do you feel your job as an editor is, "I'm just going to do what Oz tells me to do?" Or is it almost the DNA of how shots come together, do you feel like you can amplify that dreamlike detachment?

Fortin: That's a great question, and I think as you're editing something or anything, it's one day at a time, one scene at a time, one shot at a time, and it goes through you as an editor. You review it and it becomes a part of you, and you build each of these scenes individually each day. It comes together and then, all of a sudden, you have this massive timeline of scenes that are strung together. And it's a horrific, awful process to watch that first assembly edit of it because it's so painful, because it is so not the movie that this eventually becomes. But as a result of processing all that footage day by day, you start to remember certain visuals of it randomly.

When I'm out of the office, I can be shopping for my groceries and then I'll have a shot of Longlegs pop in my head, which is similar to perhaps the way that some of the scenes play out here where Lee Harker's out in her world and all of a sudden, whoa, there's a shot. And that's one of the joys of editing is you're working on a scene and then something will come in from the subconscious and it will connect to whatever scene you're working on right now is, and then you're putting these two things together. And then this third thing comes up and you're like, "What was that?" Or, "Should we try this?" And that's one of the joys is to come up with an idea or Oz will have an idea and we'll try it out, and, "Does that feel good?" "I don't know. I don't know." Well, it feels good to me.

Ng: One thing especially, it's hard to remember because we did work on Longlegs a year ago, but on the more recent projects that we're working on with Oz, and it'll come back to me as we discuss it, but as we're editing the project, there's this talking about remembering a nightmare and stuff like that. It's like, "How can we take a scene that exists in the plane of reality and bring it beyond just a person in a room?" Or, "How can we take something that two people talking isn't just two people talking?" There has to be an atmosphere of something beyond that that is seeping into reality.

And when you can have that happen, it becomes, I guess, the potential for creepiness or the atmosphere becomes more than you're just listening to people discussing or a person driving a car. It's no longer those elements. And when you can modulate the story by having little bumps of subconscious or this kind of energy that you can add into some sort of reality that the whole story starts to go above what is normal.

I know that the marketing has been very intentionally not showing what Longlegs looks like. And the marketing has been so effective that I was prepared for, "If this movie doesn't literally kill me, I'm going to be disappointed." But just literally the opening scene alone, those five minutes of the station wagon, the young Lee Harker, Longlegs standing there, and the reveal of the title, as soon as that happened, I was like, "F-ck, yes. This is what I was looking for." I wondered if you could talk about how you and Oz navigated when and how to reveal Longlegs, because the marketing is obviously going to be completely different from -- you're just trying to make this film so it's, you're not going to pull back a curtain, but how much do we tease? Is it a matter of, were you cutting frame by frame? "Nope, that's too much of him." Is it the shots that you're using?

Ng: That's a good question because that is something that we discussed the whole time. It was like, "How much do we give?" And even beyond that, "How much information do we give about the details?" There's this fine line of you tell enough about something to create intrigue, but not too much that you tip people over and give them too much information and then they see everything coming.

All that was very similar to the way that Longlegs is treated because at one point in time, the intro scene did play out longer and you get a lot more backstory and information about it, but then it's like that thing where you just see enough and you want to see more. So it's like, well, this is the perfect way, and the beginning is just by having the title right there, and then people will be like, "What? What? Where's the rest of it?" Then you get that energy and curiosity to keep people hooked until later.

It's also interesting because the character of Longlegs has a soft intro. When you do finally get to see him, you get pieces of him. It's not like the curtain's open and there's a big fanfare. It happens very slowly in a way, which is his character being kind of bizarre, a little bit older, maybe tired as a character, and washed up. It's like there's this glam rock aspect to him, burnt out idea that his character carries and he's handled in that way.

Fortin: I do remember putting together the titles we're talking about, the opening titles, and I remember Oz had the T-Rex song in mind. And I remember him saying, "We're going to blow everybody's socks off. This is going to be f-cking cool." He's like, "Imagine sitting in the theater and having this..." He knew what it was going to be.

Longlegs is in theaters now. Come back next week for more of our conversation with Greg Ng and Graham Fortin.

Captain America: Brave New World: Marvel Reveals Major Connection to Black Widow https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-marvel-black-widow-connection-sabra-mcu/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 16:24:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 27ccc01d-8231-497c-9d36-c75a2947c828

With the release of the trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, audiences got confirmation that Shira Haas had joined the cast as Ruth Bat-Seraph, better known in the comics as the Israeli superhero Sabra. According to Marvel, the Ruth in Captain America: Brave New World will be a former Black Widow, and now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross (Harrison Ford). The trailer provided fans with a first look at Sabra, although there's not much context for what her role is in the movie.

Created by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema, Sabra first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #250, where she actually squared off with the big green guy (something that might have relevance given her close relationship to the Red Hulk in the movie). You can see a first-look screenshot below (via Cosmic Marvel):

captain-america-brave-new-world-sabra.jpg
(Photo: Marvel)

How much of her comic book persona will carry over to the film is hard to say. Certainly as a first-look, it seems like she is mostly a government officer, rather than a superhero, although given that the President himself is hiding super powers in the movie, it seems pretty likely other members of his staff could do the same. In the comics, she is a member of the Israeli super-soldier program, giving her more or less the same power set as Captain America.

It is also unclear how or if Marvel and Disney will tackle the first appearance of a Mossad-trained Israeli super-soldier with a key role in U.S. government in their huge tentpole blockbuster. There were rumors that the character had been cut from the movie to avoid any controversy related to the ongoing conflict in Palestine, but obviously that isn't true.

Captain America: Brave New World is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Fans of the Scream horror franchise have a 7th installment to look forward to, but in the short term there are new Funko Pops to collect. Three new versions of Ghostface were released back in June, and the lineup includes a standard Pop, a 10-inch Pop, and a glow-in-the-dark Amazon exclusive that sold out quickly. A restock for the GITD exclusive might happen on Amazon in the future, for the time being you can grab one here at the Funko Shop while it lasts.

Neve Campbell Returns In Scream 7

While Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega won't appear in the upcoming sequel, it was confirmed back in March that Neve Campbell would be returning a Sidney Prescott after a pay dispute left her on the sidelines for Scream VI.

Neve Campbell officially announced her return for Scream 7 in an Instagram post. "Hi All. I'm so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!" Campbell wrote. "It's always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I'm very happy and proud to say I've been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn't be more thrilled!!! Well actually I could. While I've been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I've dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it's happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7! This was his baby and it's his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years. To the amazing Scream fans, I hope you are as excited as I am. See you on set @kevwilliamson"

Godzilla Minus One Minus Color Reveals Netflix Release Date https://comicbook.com/anime/news/godzilla-minus-one-minus-color-netflix-release-date/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 15:58:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 3494eb44-db3a-4bbb-9876-7ce9c2492ed0

Godzilla Minus One rampaged up the charts when it came to the numbers that the lizard king was netting on Netflix. While the physical Blu-Ray/4K set is coming to North America this September, Netflix subscribers already have the chance to revisit what is considered by many to be the greatest Godzilla movie of all time. Thanks to the movie's ever-growing popularity, Netflix has announced that the legendary take on the film, "Godzilla Minus One Minus Color" is joining the platform's roster. Considered by the director to be far scarier than the original version, it might be worth returning to the world of Godzilla this summer.

Earlier this year, Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki described to the LA Times why he felt that the black and white version of his Academy Award winning film was the scarier iteration, "I want to say it's scarier because it feels like it's happening in real life. It's a different level of scariness than the color version. We didn't just tint it and turn on a black and white switch; almost each cut, we added a touch of special effects to meet the standards of what this would look like if it were shot in black and white."

Godzilla Minus One Minus Color's Release Date

Godzilla Minus One Minus Color will hit Netflix on August 1st. While the new take on the king of the monsters doesn't include new footage, it does give the film a far eerier take and once again reflects the origins of the kaiju since Godzilla's first movie was also shown without color.

In a separate interview for the black and white version of the kaiju film, Yamazaki broke down the process of creating the new take on the classic king of the monsters, "What I was aiming for was a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography. We were able to unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the scenery that were hidden in the photographed data. Then, a frightening Godzilla, just like the one in the documentary, appeared. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges. Please live and resist further fear at the theater."

Captain America: Brave New World Trailer Addresses Thunderbolt Ross Recasting https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-trailer-thunderbolt-ross-recasting-harrison-ford-mcu/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 15:48:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 11f2eab7-3873-4805-9397-2311e111e0dc

Marvel's recasting of Thunderbolt Ross is addressed in the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. Harrison Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, taking over for the late William Hurt. Ross is one of the central figures in Captain America: Brave New World, acting opposite Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. But what's at the top of everyone's mind is getting a look at Red Hulk, and while the Captain America: Brave New World teaser trailer does show Red Hulk, it also addresses the recasting that took place.

One of the opening scenes in the Captain America: Brave New World trailer features Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson speaking to Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross. "I have to admit, I'm still getting used to the new look," Sam says, to which Thaddeus replies, "They said lose the mustache or lose the election." The new look that Sam is referring to is Harrison Ford taking on the role of the General, who is the current President of the United States. This isn't the first time the MCU has cheekily addressed a recasting, with one example being Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard as James "Rhodey" Rhodes.

Marvel Studios Finally Acknowledges Eternals in Sneaky Captain America 4 Trailer Scene https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-studios-acknowledges-eternals-sneaky-captain-america-brave-new-world-trailer/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 14:19:00 +0000 Liam Crowley f2dbc15c-4f24-4e67-a5c9-82cfea861976

Captain America: Brave New World is bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe together like its the Infinity Saga. The first teaser trailer for the Anthony Mackie-led fourquel showcases the aforementioned leading man in his star-spangled suit, as Mackie's Sam Wilson has embraced the stars and stripes since 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Wilson now has to deal with a familiar face with a "new look," Harrison Ford's Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Ross and Wilson previously butted heads during Captain America: Civil War, as Ross pushed for the Sokovia Accords while Wilson took the side of Steve Rogers. In Brave New World, Ross is attempting to get on the same page as Wilson again by integrating Captain America back into the military.

Chaos ensues from there, as the White House is attacked and flashes of action follow. Among those quick glimpses is Wilson soaring past a massive rocky structure, which eagle-eyed MCU fans while recognize as a major monument.

Captain America 4 Brings in Eternals's Tiamut

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

The half-risen Celestial has finally been acknowledged.

The Captain America: Brave New World teaser poster features the first glimpse of Tiamut since the Earth-born Celestial erupted out of the Earth's surface in 2021's Eternals. Beyond that, this is the first big screen acknowledgement of the events of Eternals outside of the Eternals film itself.

The long-running rumor about Captain America: Brave New World is that Tiamut will be a point of contention for global superpowers, as countries from across the world will attempt to claim it and its resources. Among those resources will supposedly be adamantium, the fictional metal from Marvel Comics that makes up Wolverine's skeleton.

In Eternals, the Celestial known as Arishem the Judge revealed that planets within the Marvel Cinematic Universe are essentially cocoons for Celestials themselves, and life helps them be born. Following the repopulation that Earth experienced after Avengers: Endgame brought back the missing half of the universe, Arishem declared that Earth was ready to give birth to its Celestial, Tiamut. Tiamut began to break out from the Earth's crust but the Eternals stopped the birth before it could be complete, resulting in Tiamut's giant hand and face being the only things visible.

In the many MCU films since Eternals, none had acknowledged that a massive hand and face had grown out of the Earth. Now, it appears that Tiamut and the events of Eternals will be a central plot point for Wilson's first feature film adventure as the star-spangled man.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14th, 2025.

Captain America: Brave New World Gets an Ominous Red Hulk Teaser Poster https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-ominous-red-hulk-teaser-poster-harrison-ford-anthony-mackie/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 13:56:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 0b7a0541-40e7-4ecd-be31-a89a7841341d

Captain America: Brave New World represents a lot of firsts. It is the first installment in the Captain America franchise since 2016. It is the first Captain America movie without Chris Evans's Steve Rogers. It is Anthony Mackie's first time leading a Marvel Studios feature film. It is also the first time Harrison Ford will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the passing of William Hurt, Marvel Studios cast Ford in the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Hurt had played the role in five MCU films. Marvel Studios had big plans for Ross going into the post-Infinity Saga which is what prompted the recast, and the long rumored endgame for the character was to bring his red rage monster to life.

New Captain America 4 Poster Teases Red Hulk

Red Hulk is coming.

Paired with its official teaser trailer, Marvel Studios has unveiled the first teaser poster for Captain America: Brave New World. The poster features the classic Captain America shield alongside a massive red hand encasing it. This hand belongs to Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross's (Harrison Ford) red rage monster alter ego, the Red Hulk.

You can check out the poster below...

"I thought, 'Everybody else seems to be having a great time.' I watch all these terrific actors having a good time," Ford said when asked what prompted him to join the MCU. "I like doing something different to what I've ever done and pleasing people with it. So I'll try a piece of that."

Captain America: Brave New World follows up on the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. That series, the second live-action Marvel Studios television production, told the tale of Sam Wilson's assimilation into the Captain America mantle, one which was rockier than the ending of Avengers: Endgame suggested. Despite Steve Rogers enthusiastically handing Wilson the shield, Wilson resisted the role, turning over the vibranium frisbee to the government and remaining in his role as the Falcon.

The government immediately turned and brought a new face in to take on the mantle, Wyatt Russell's John Walker, a move that left Wilson shocked and betrayed. As all parties attempted to take down the villainous Flag Smashers, Walker's true colors would be revealed, as he brought dishonor to the Stars and Stripes by using Cap's shield as a weapon. From that moment, Wilson decided to step up, embracing the shield and donning a new vibranium-weave suit as he and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) took the fight to the Flag Smashers in New York City.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14th, 2025.

Red Hulk has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. The first Captain America film starring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson as the Sentinel of Liberty lands in theaters next year, but Marvel Studios is giving fans an early look at the blockbuster movie. Harrison Ford steps into the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross / Red Hulk, taking over for the late William Hurt. There's been an expectation that Ford's Ross would be transformed into Red Hulk in Brave New World, but aside from merchandise and marketing, fans haven't seen what Red Hulk will look like. Thankfully, the final moments of the trailer gave fans a quick look.

Captain America is about to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On Thursday, Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, the next live-action film in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brave New World is centered around Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who officially became Captain America at the very end of the first season of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Now, Brave New World will follow Sam on his first cinematic solo adventure as Captain America, which is sure to travel down some interesting paths.

"It kind of brought my Marvel experience full circle because we shot in D.C. at the same hotel that we shot 'Winter Soldier' at," Mackie said of the film in a previous interview with The Wrap. "One of my first Marvel scenes was me sitting at a table talking to the senator and me and Chris [Evans] and Scarlett [ Johansson] kidnapping him and we go back and we stay at the same hotel and we shot at that same area. So in that regard, it was really emotional to think how far my character has come and where he is now after the 10 years that I've been in the MCU."

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Sequel Gets Major Update From Seth Rogen https://comicbook.com/movies/news/tmnt-mutant-mayhem-sequel-major-update-seth-rogen/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 12:23:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 053cf4bf-7a0d-46b6-90e3-36fe71c28972

Seth Rogen says the planned sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is coming along pretty well. There's apparently a full-storyboarded animatic of the movie, and it has a title -- one that Rogen says he's very excited about. The star has been a steady presence in animation recently, with Mutant Mayhem joining things like Invincible and The Super Mario Bros. Movie on his resume. His latest animated outing, Prime Video's Sausage Party: Foodtopia, just dropped on the streamer, and Rogen spoke with ComicBook in support of the show. That's when Chris Killian took the chance to ask a little more about Mutant Mayhem.

"There is a title, and it's awesome, but I don't think I can say it," Rogen told ComicBook. "But when it came up on the screen, I stood up and cheered. There's an animatic -- there's a storyboarded version of the whole movie, so they're working on it right now."

Prime Video premiered all eight episodes of Sausage Party: Foodtopia exclusively on Prime Video on July 11. In addition to the returning cast members from the original Sausage Party movie, Sausage Party: Foodtopia will also feature Natasha Rothwell and Yassir Lester who lend their voices to the animated series, plus Will Forte as a human character named Jack, and Sam Richardson, who will portray an orange named Julius. Based off the 2016 animated feature Sausage Party, the series Sausage Party: Foodtopia follows Frank, Brenda, Barry, and Sammy as they try to build their own food society.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is executive produced by Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who also serve as showrunners. Shaffir and Hunter co-wrote the 2016 animated feature film with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee will executive produce via Point Grey Pictures, Madeline Blair oversees for Point Grey Pictures. Conrad Vernon, who co-directed the feature film, returns as director for the series and will also executive produce alongside Annapurna Television's Megan Ellison, Patrick Chu, and Andrew Millstein. Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a co-production of Annapurna Television, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon MGM Studios. The original film was a co-production between Columbia Pictures and Great Beyond.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is on Amazon Prime Video now.

Teenage Mutans Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem stars Micah Abbey as Donatello, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo, Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, and Brady Noon Raphael. The cast also includes Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, John Cena as Rocksteady, Jackie Chan as Splinter, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O'Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Seth Rogen as Bebop, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II Comes to Digital -- But Only on Prime https://comicbook.com/movies/news/winnie-the-pooh-blood-and-honey-ii-comes-to-digital-but-only-on-prime/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 11:40:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f828cbb8-8cd6-4c83-9f99-844242a47ecb

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, the second in a series of public domain horror movies known colloquially as The Poohniverse, is now available to rent or buy on Digital...with a twist. This week, Jagged Edge Productions announced that the film is debuting exclusively on Amazon, and for the first little while, will be available exclusively on Prime Video. The slasher sequel arrives from director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and is produced by and stars Scott Chambers. This film is the sequel to writer/director Frake-Waterfield's hit micro-budget film Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which gained viral popularity in 2022. In the dark reimagining of the Winnie-the-Pooh franchise, Christopher Robins has grown up and moved on, while Pooh and Piglet grow lonely and disillusioned - and eventually feral man-eating killers.

"Bigger and Badder. The sequel will feature new creature designs, a new cast, and a high death count," Rhys Frake-Waterfield said when describing the sequel. "However, this time Pooh and friends will be leaving the 100 Acre Wood to take their fight to the quiet community of Ashdown!"

Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 stars acclaimed actor Simon Callow (Shakespeare in Love, The Witcher), Tallulah Evans join the cast and will lead the film, starring alongside Scott Chambers (Doctor Jekyll, Malpractice) as Christopher Robin, Ryan Olivia (Seasoning House) as Winnie-the-Pooh, and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney (The Pope's Exorcist) as Young Winnie-the-Pooh. Callow stars as a character called Cavendish. The screenplay was written by Matt Leslie from a story he co-wrote with Rhys Frake-Waterfield; Shaune Harrison (World War Z, Game of Thrones) will be the creature/gore designer, while Paula Anne Booker will oversee sound effects. Vince Knight returns as cinematographer.

Here's the official synopsis for the movie: Deep within the 100-Acre-Wood, a destructive rage grows as Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and Tigger find their home and their lives endangered after Christopher Robin revealed their existence. Not wanting to live in the shadows any longer, the group decides to take the fight to the town of Ashdown, home of Christopher Robin, leaving a bloody trail of death and mayhem in their wake. Winnie and his savage friends will soon show everyone that the hunters will soon become the hunted, whilst looking to exact their revenge on Christopher Robin once and for all.

Elf: Will Ferrell Reveals Co-Star Called Him "Not Funny" on Set https://comicbook.com/movies/news/elf-will-ferrell-james-caan-not-funny-movie-set/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 03:25:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely f152914b-7c70-49a5-8a2f-192afeeed6c9

Elf hit theaters back in 2003 and immediately entered the pantheon of classic Christmas movies. Will Ferrell's performance as Buddy the Elf helped vault the Saturday Night Live alum into comedy superstardom, but one of his main costars in the film didn't think he was actually funny when they were on set. The late James Caan played Buddy's father, Walter, in Elf, and shared quite a few scenes with Ferrell throughout the film. According to Ferrell, Caan didn't find his performance amusing.

During a recent episode of the MeSsy podcast, hosted by Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Ferrell revealed that Caan told him on multiple occasions that he wasn't very funny.

"James Caan, may he rest in peace, we had such a good time working on that movie," Ferrell said. "He would tease me. I like to do bits but I'm not like 'on' all the time. In between set ups, [Caan] would be like, 'I don't get you. You're not funny.' And I'm like, 'I know. I'm not Robin Williams.' And he was like, 'People ask me: "Is he funny?" And I'm like, "No, he's not funny."' It was all with love but at the same time..."

Ferrell went on to say that Caan actually changed his tune when Elf was hitting theaters and he could watch the final product. The actor explained on the podcast that Caan approached him after the premiere screening and complimented his comedy.

"He was like, 'I've got to tell you: I thought everything you were doing while we were filming was way too over the top. Now that I see it in the movie, it's brilliant,'" said Ferrell. "But I love that the whole time, he's not acting. He's truly annoyed with me. He's like, 'Can this guy shut the fuck up? Jesus.' I literally drove him crazy in that movie, just acting like that kid. But that was the funniest thing, him walking out of the theater and shaking his head and going 'it's brilliant.'"

As Ferrell noted, Caan's feelings with his comedy likely helped Elf in the long run. Walter spends much of the movie completely fed up with Buddy, never fully knowing what to do with him and never finding him amusing. With Caan actually feeling that way about Ferrell, it took the character to a new level.

Hollywood Black: Prime Video Releases Trailer For Docu-Series Featuring Ryan Coogler, Ava Duvernay, and More https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/hollywood-black-prime-video-trailer-ryan-coogler-ava-duvernay-w-kamau-bell/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 02:46:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7262659c-43ba-4c62-8c36-08e2b4689fd7

Prime Video has released the official synopsis for Hollywood Black, a new, four-part docuseries chronicling the history of cinema through a Black perspective. Inspired by the book of the same name by historian Donald Bogle, the series features Ryan Coogler (Creed), Ava DuVernay (Selma), LaKeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You), Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog), and more. According to publisher Running Press, Hollywood Black: The Stars, The Films, The Filmmakers is a history lesson that starts in the silent era and moves up through Marvel's (and Coogler's) game-changing Black Panther.

The trailer sets up the premise of the series with a simple question, which is then answered, half-answered, and iterated on by various different film luminaries: what is a Black film to you?

Per Running Press, "The story opens in the silent film era, when white actors in blackface often played black characters, but also saw the rise of independent African American filmmakers, including the remarkable Oscar Micheaux. It follows the changes in the film industry with the arrival of sound motion pictures and the Great Depression, when black performers such as Stepin Fetchit and Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson began finding a place in Hollywood. More often than not, they were saddled with rigidly stereotyped roles, but some gifted performers."

The photos and interviews featured in Bogle's book carry through to the TV series, in which they talk about Black filmmakers' struggles to be treated with dignity and recognized for their work.

Here's the official synopsis for the series: "Inspired by the book from historian Donald Bogle, Hollywood Black, directed by Justin Simien, chronicles the history of cinema, but from a radically Black perspective. By unearthing personal stories from actors, writers, directors, and producers who fought for their place on the page, behind the camera and on the screen, the series provides a critical reexamination of a quintessentially American story--in brilliant color."

Directed by Justin Simien, Hollywood Black stars Justin Simien, W. Kamau Bell, Steven Caple, Jr., Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Issa Rae, LaKeith Stanfield, Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, Forest Whitaker, and more. The series is executive produced by Culture Machine's Justin Simien and Kyle Laursen; Significant Productions' Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi; RadicalMedia's Dave Sirulnick, Stacey Reiss, and Jon Kamen; Jeffrey Swartz; and Shayla Harris, who also serves as showrunner.

Hollywood Black debuts August 11, 2024 on MGM+

Deadpool & Wolverine: Kevin Feige Says Set Photo Leaks Were Worth It https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-kevin-feige-set-photo-leaks/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 02:35:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson c2eda5bc-2bc6-4aa7-82a2-56a4bc364136

Deadpool & Wolverine is right around the corner, finally bringing the fan-favorite Marvel movie series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new threequel has already broken the Internet multiple times over prior to its release, including when the first look at Hugh Jackman's new comic-accurate Wolverine costume was unveiled when the project filmed some scenes outdoors. That filmmaking tactic broke a bit of Marvel Studios formula and resulted in a small handful of details leaking online -- but according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, it was worth the risk. In a recent interview with Variety, Feige did admit that Deadpool & Wolverine's exterior shoots were something of a risk, one that ultimately paid off to get the film's realistic locations.

"That was very important to us," Feige explained. "We didn't want this to be a green screen box for all of the locations. We want it to be out in the real world, and that always comes with potential tradeoffs. We were in a lot of secure locations and places that were far away from prying eyes -- with the exception of drones. It was a new experience for me to have paparazzi drones flying over flying over set. Sometimes things look cool in a behind-the-scenes photo, but most often, they don't look great. I think people are savvy enough over the years to know that's not what it will look like in the movie. That being said, Wolverine in that yellow outfit looks cool from any angle, drone or shot through the trees."

Is Deadpool & Wolverine Set in the MCU?

While both Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool originated in the former Fox universe, the trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine have clearly indicated that the characters will be hopping over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview last October, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy confirmed that the project is definitely set in the MCU.

"I'm so wary of giving anything away because I've learned the hard way that even with a few titles - like any Marvel title - everything and anything you say can lead to not only rumors but misinformation. I'll just say this: It's very much part of the MCU, what a privilege, what a wealth of resources and knowledge."

What Is Deadpool & Wolverine About?

Bill Paxton's Son Reveals His Twisters Cameo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/twisters-bill-paxton-son-cameo-twister-movie/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 01:04:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 72eb6777-9b18-450f-bc58-7dc70b6469d7

Twisters doesn't contain any legacy characters that tie the film's story into Twister, but the new blockbuster's cast does have a deep connection to the star of Jan de Bont's beloved 1996 movie. Twister starred beloved actor Bill Paxton, who sadly passed away back in 2017. In honor of the late star, as well as the original Twister, Twisters actually features a cameo from Paxton's 30-year-old son, James.

This week, Entertainment Weekly confirmed James Paxton's involvement with Twisters, who plays a small role in the film as a "disgruntled motel guest." While speaking to the outlet, Paxton revealed that it took him a while before he was actually sold on appearing in the legacy sequel.

"Well, initially, my agents sent me an audition, and I had to read for a role," Paxton said. "Some time went by and I didn't really hear anything, so I had made peace with, 'Oh, I guess maybe it's not going to work out.' And then, I heard from my team that they were offering a role."

"It took me a little bit of time to process it, just given the context of my dad and his significance in the original and him not being here," he continued. "It's an emotional thing. It wasn't something that I could really decide immediately, It took a little time just to process it, just the magnitude of it."

Paxton ultimately agreed to take on the role in Twisters as a way to not only honor his father, but bring the spirit of the original to the sequel's set.

"I wanted to be a conduit for his spirit there and cheer everyone in this production on to success because I know he would be. I wanted to do something that really honors his presence in this new chapter and really do something for him. And I realized there's a lot of amazing people involved in this that I would love to get to know. And so it ended up feeling like the right thing to do, to be representative of Dad there.

In Twisters, after surviving a devastating encounter with a tornado, former storm chaser Kate Cooper monitors extreme weather from behind a computer screen. When an opportunity arises to test cutting-edge equipment, Kate heads to the Midwest to track twisters, putting her on a collision course not only with the deadly phenomena, but also with social-media star Tyler Owens. As the storms in Oklahoma intensify, the pair must unite and combine their unique skills to survive the most extreme weather imaginable.

Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, Katy O'Brian, and Maura Tierney. Lee Isaac Chung directed the sequel from a script by Mark L. Smith. Twisters releases in theaters on July 19th.

Daisy Ridley's Young Woman and the Sea Gets Streaming Premiere Date https://comicbook.com/movies/news/young-woman-sea-movie-streaming-disney-plus-daisy-ridley/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 22:05:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 6625598e-3c0e-43c1-9e67-52e920093741

The highest-testing film in legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer's storied career is making its way to streaming this month. Young Woman and the Sea, based on the true story of Olympic swimmer Gertrude Ederle, had a limited theatrical release at the end of May. The chance for a wider audience to see it is finally coming in a little over a week, as Disney announced that the film will make its streaming debut on July 19th.

Like every other Disney movie, Young Woman and the Sea will call Disney+ its streaming home, and that's the service where fans will be able to check it out when it debuts online next week. There hasn't been any word yet about a video on-demand or physical release for Young Woman and the Sea.

Daisy Ridley stars in Young Woman and the Sea as Ederle, who famously made the 21-mile swim across the English Channel. The film got its inspiration from the real-life swimmer, as well as Glenn Stout's book Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World.

Young Woman and the Sea follows in the footsteps of other Disney collaborations with Jerry Bruckheimer in the past, having worked together on the National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. This film was actually a Pirates reunions in more ways than one, as director Joachim R?nning previously helmed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which Bruckheimer produced.

What Is Young Woman and the Sea About?

You can check out the official synopsis for Young Woman and the Sea below!

"Young Woman and the Sea tells the story of Gertrude Ederle, the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905. Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement - a 21-mile trek from France to England.

"Young Woman and the Sea is directed by Joachim R?nning, with a script from Jeff Nathanson. The film is produced by Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who acquired the rights to Stout's book back in 2015. In addition to Ridley, the cast of Young Woman and the Sea includes Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler."

Practical Magic 2 Producer Promises Story Will Be "Very Faithful" to Source Material https://comicbook.com/movies/news/practical-magic-2-producer-promises-story-will-be-very-faithful-to-source-material/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 21:58:00 +0000 Nicole Drum a23029e1-050f-4b28-8be1-bfac373b7183

Last month, Warner Bros. Pictures delighted fans of Practical Magic when they announced that Practical Magic 2 was officially in the works with stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock returning. Now, producer Denise Di Novi says that the eagerly anticipated sequel is going to be going back to the books when it comes to continuing the story of the Owens sisters. Speaking with EW, Di Novi said that Practical Magic 2 will draw heavily from author Alice Hoffman's The Book of Magic, the 2021 sequel to 1995's Practical Magic upon which the first book was based.

"I think [fans are] going to be very pleased," Di Novi said. "We're going to be very faithful. We're cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We're not going to reinvent the wheel. We're going to draw from Alice Hoffmann's books, as the first movie did, and we're going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is."

Di Novi also explained that while Bullock and Kidman are returning for the sequel, they're "not 100 percent sure which other characters will return" -- the original Practical Magic film also starred Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Goran Visnjic, Evan Rachel Wood, Aidan Quinn, and Caprice Benedetti -- but did reveal that the film is expected to be released sometime next year.

"It's going to be in 2025, but I'm not exactly sure when," Di Novi said. "We're just beginning the script, and Akiva Goldsman, who worked on the original and 10 million things since then, is writing the script."

What is Practical Magic About?

Based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Hoffman, Practical Magic opened in theaters in 1998 and follows sisters Gillian and Sally who, following the tragic death of their parents, are raised by their aunts. As it turns out, the girls descend from a long line of witches with a curse following their ancestry thanks to a spell cast that would doom any man that falls in love with a woman from the Owens family.

Fans of the film have been eager for a sequel for years. Hoffman's Practical Magic series of novels not only continued the story with 2021's The Book of Magic, but there were two additional prequel books as well, 2017's The Rules of Magic and 2000's Magic Lessons. Outside of the books, Practical Magic was also the subject of various planned television revivals and a reboot pilot was even shot for CBS in 2004 while a prequel series went into development in 2010 for ABC Family, but neither project was picked up. In 2019, another prequel project was in the works at Max, but it also didn't come to fruition.

Ryan Reynolds Teases Surprise Deadpool & Wolverine Cameos: "We're Hiding a Lot" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-deadpool-wolverine-cameos-spoilers-ryan-reynolds/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 20:00:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo e9cbf97b-c21f-4a7c-ba15-9d6c328895d3

The Merc with a Mouth may be a chatterbox, but Ryan Reynolds is tight-lipped about Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor and producer has been overseas promoting the Marvel Studios movie with co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, the trio that teamed for the celebrity cameo-filled Free Guy in 2021. Like that movie -- which had everything from Hulk hands and Captain America's shield to the star-spangled Avenger himself, MCU alum Chris Evans -- Deadpool & Wolverine is holding back its biggest surprises until it hits theaters July 26th.

"We wish we could show you the whole movie, but Marvel won't let us do that. We have to wait a couple more weeks," Levy said when introducing a 35-minute sneak peek during a recent fan event in Berlin.

The spoiler-free first reactions to the preview were overwhelmingly positive, with fans who attended the screening revealing that the trailers released so far have mostly contained footage from the film's first half hour. (Deadpool & Wolverine has a runtime clocking in just over two hours, leaving plenty of time for more surprises in what is the longest Deadpool movie yet.)

"The honest truth is we're hiding a lot, which is why we're showing this amount of footage," Reynolds teased. "There's kind of an impossible amount of surprises that, in a couple of weeks, we're so excited to unleash."

Official trailers have already confirmed that Sabretooth and Toad from 2000's X-Men are among the misfit mutants assembled by Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) at her base fashioned from a giant-sized Ant-Man corpse in the Void -- effectively a multiversal junkyard for timelines pruned by the Time Variance Authority (as seen in Loki) -- along with Aaron Stanford's Pyro, back for the first time in nearly 20 years. Other characters glimpsed in promo material include Lady Deathstrike (from 2003's X2: X-Men United), Juggernaut (from 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand), and Azazel (from 2011's X-Men: First Class).

Levy has acknowledged that "there's a lot of characters" in Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees the dysfunctional duo of Wade Wilson (Reynolds) and Logan (Jackman) team up to save a universe (or a few) on a multiverse adventure.

"We didn't want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie," Levy previously told EW. "But they are peppered in throughout. There's a lot of characters. The internet is a delight of rumors about the multitude of character cameos that are in this movie. Some rumors are true, some are way off base."

Reynolds and Jackman star alongside returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?; Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joins the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox, with The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine is playing only in theaters July 26th.

Fly Me to the Moon: Breakout Star Anna Garcia Learned "Poise and Grace" From Scarlett Johansson https://comicbook.com/movies/news/fly-me-to-the-moon-anna-garcia-poise-grace-scarlett-johansson/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 18:49:00 +0000 Liam Crowley e6277ca7-c27d-4f21-8e0b-aecb103f43af

Fly Me to the Moon is a first for many members of its company. It is the first time leading stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum captain a movie together. It is Johansson's first time starring as well as executive producing outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And for newcomer Anna Garcia, it is her first feature film. Garcia's acting credits go back to 2017, as she has guest starred on a number of television programs, including Superstore, Bunk'd, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Fly Me to the Moon represents her first leap to the big screen, and she is doing it in a major way.

Anna Garcia plays Ruby Martin, the assistant to Scarlett Johansson's Kelly Jones. This meant that Garcia was essentially shadowing Johansson every time the cameras were rolling.

Speaking to ComicBook, Garcia opened up about what she learned from working so closely alongside Johansson throughout Fly Me to the Moon.

"The first thing I learned is how to carry yourself with poise and grace," Garcia said. "Being on set is an insane experience. Anything can go wrong at any moment. There's so many people and she just knows how to stay kind and level-headed and roll with the punches. I just feel like I learned so much grace from her."

Life eventually began to imitate art when the cameras weren't rolling.

"It was so funny. We shot a seat on the plane and she had her scenes in front of her and she like marked a little word and I was like, 'What was that? What did you do?'" Garcia continued. "I was becoming so assistant in real life too. I feel like it's an acting master class being around her."

Fly Me to the Moon soars into theaters this Friday, July 12th.

Fly Me to the Moon tells the tale of the real-life space race of the 1960s but with a conspiratorial twist. Shadowy government figure Moe Berkus (Woody Harrelson) approaches Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) with a top-secret mission entitled "Project Artemis," an effort to film a faked moon landing to ensure the United States government has backup footage to air in case the legitimate Apollo 11 mission fails. Jones works alongside NASA launch director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) to "sell" the moon to an American public that has lost interest in interstellar exploration while simultaneously concealing the conspiratorial side of her job at NASA.

Alien: Romulus Just Dropped a Behind-the-Scenes Look and Even That Is Terrifying https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-just-dropped-a-behind-the-scenes-look-and-even-that-is-terrifying/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 18:21:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e87ba582-18ae-4af8-ae49-63b1fc9551e1

Alien: Romulus is heading the theaters next month, and the new sci-fi/horror-thriller is expected to take the beloved franchise back to its roots. The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) helmed the film from a script he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2). Today, 20th Century Studios released a new behind-the-scenes look at the film that features Spaeny, ?lvarez, and more teasing what's to come.

"The whole idea behind this film was to really take it back to basics and make it a pure horror movie again," ?lvarez teases in the featurette. It's also confirmed that the film is set between Alien and Aliens. "A horrifying return to the big screen," 20th Century Studios captioned the video. "Experience Alien: Romulus in IMAX. In theaters everywhere August 16." You can check out the behind-the-scenes video below:

Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16th.

Minions 3 Finally Revealed With 2027 Release Date https://comicbook.com/movies/news/minions-3-finally-revealed-with-2027-release-date/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 18:15:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 719c1c54-308e-4f87-b950-0d37a23ffa20

Minions 3 is officially happening. The sequel will arrive in theaters on June 30, 2027, Illumination announced today. That date puts it on track to be the big July 4 weekend opener -- something that makes a lot of sense, given that Despicable Me 4 just earned over $200 million in its global opening. The movie will be written by Brian Lynch (Minions, Big Helium Dog) and directed by Oscar nominee Pierre Coffin, a director on the first three Despicable Me movies and Minions. The film will be produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Bill Ryan.

There are no details on Minions 3 yet, but it seems safe to assume that it will once again involve the Minions in the past, helping Young Gru (Steve Carell) get into some shenanigans. On the other hand, some fans online have already started to speculate about the possibility of moving the Minions movies up into the present day and starting to focus them on Poppy Prescott (Joey King), who first appears as an aspiring supervillain in Despicable Me 4.

Coffin, in addition to directing, will provide Minions voices, which he has done since they debuted in 2010's Despicable Me. Variety first reported the news.

The franchise has been a pop culture phenomenon since then, closing in on $5 billion in total box office. The last Minions movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru, debuted at $125 million at the domestic box office and ended up making $939 million worldwide. Last week's Despicable Me 4 earned $122 million domestically, and is one of only a handful of big-budget tentpoles released this year to make a big splash.

The first Minions movie saw the gibberish-talking, indestructible goofballs working for Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world's first woman supervillain. By the end of the movie, she declared war on her own minions and lost -- leading them right to the doorstep of a very young Gru. In the second film, the Minions helped Gru and his favorite supervillain, Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), in a battle with a team of supervillains bent on killing them.

Lynch also wrote both Secret Life of Pets movies, Hop, and has story credits on Minions: The Rise of Gru and Puss in Boots. In addition to his work on the Despicable Me franchise, Coffin serves as the series director for the French animated series Pat et Stanley.

Superman: Isabela Merced Praises James Gunn's Hawkgirl https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-james-gunn-hawkgirl-isabela-merced-praises-suit-filming/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 17:27:00 +0000 Aaron Perine e83cacbd-111f-4403-8f68-481f1bbaa972

Superman's Isabela Merced has some praise for James Gunn's process with this movie. Empire Magazine profiled the actress ahead of of Alien: Romulus and the new take on The Man of Tomorrow. Merced said that putting on that Hawkgirl suit is still a thrill everytime it happens. DC fans have been peeking at the filming for Superman on social media. Kendrra Saunders has already made some appearances on-set with her flying alongside other heroes. Merced and others have to know that a large portion of the comic book world is absolutely leaning on every single word from the production. The Hawkgirl actress isn't spoiling anything though. But, it's clear, she's soaring with anticipation like the rest of us.

When it comes to Superman details, the actress is on high alert. Merced joked, "I can feel James Gunn's eyes boring into the back of my head." She continued, "Honestly, inside I'm just a nerdy guy. I feel like that's who I actually am. I'm geeking out every time I try on the supersuit! It's just the coolest thing in the world to me." A lot of DC fans feel extremely similarly and can't wait to see all these characters in action.

When it comes to this new era of the DC Universe, all eyes are on James Gunn's Superman. In Cleveland, this production has spawned so many viral images already. But, the affection runs deeper than simply seeing your DC favorites realized with comics-accurate suits. Merced's Kendra Saunders will play a role alongside some of these heroes. In her eyes, Gunn is doing an amazing job at capturing a fresh take on this wild world of characters. She told The Hollywood Reporter about his signature style and how its shaping Metropolis.

"James Gunn is so creative and he has such a unique style, and whatever he touches, he always adds his own flair to it," Merced told the outlet. "And for that reason, I'm very excited. I was directed by him during the [screen] test for this, because I auditioned for this. I got to do [the screen test] with my other castmates, and that was really cool. It felt very professional; it was almost like a legitimate shooting day."

"So I've already learned so much about his process, and this man has such a solid team," she added. "He has the best of the best working for him, and they've worked together for so long that it's only up to me to mess it up. So I hope that I can understand and take notes and continue training and just be healthy throughout it all. Then I'll be able to give the fans the performance they deserve."
