The Long Room in the Trinity College Library on July 14, 2018 in Dublin, Ireland.

Fairytale Ireland

Our week-long tour around Ireland starts and ends in Dublin, a city with just about as much literary history as any city on Earth. You’ll get a guided tour of the city’s most fabled old streets, so keep an eye out for plaques, bridges, parks and streets named in honour of the city’s impressive roster of literary greats, including James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and Bram Stoker. Watch out for Abbey Theatre, founded by poet W.B. Yeats in 1903, and Davy Byrne’s pub, which features in Joyce’s Ulysses. Our tour includes a visit to the spectacular Book of Kells, Trinity College’s famous old library, which is about as inspiring a sight as any young reader or writer can witness. Having prodded your class’ imagination in Dublin, we’ll embark on a coastal road trip through County Cork, Kerry and Galway – who knows, perhaps the power of the Cliffs of Moher might inspire some new works of great modern literature?

Jacobite steam train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, as seen in Harry Potter

Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands by Train

When Unesco began curating their prestigious Cities of Literature programme in 2004, the first place they honoured was Edinburgh. With good reason, too. From legendary wordsmiths like Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns, to the edginess of Irvine Welsh’s unique working class voice and the global phenomenon that is J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, this city has never stopped producing greats written works. It’s also one of the best cities in the world for bookshops, so be sure to pop into Blackwell’s and the Golden Hare, or plan your visit during August to take in the annual International Book Festival. The Scottish capital is the final destination on our weeklong Rail Trip, which actually starts in another great literary city, London, where we catch the Caledonian sleeper train to Fort William. Ride on the Jacobite steam train – AKA the real-life Hogwarts Express, explore the artsy city of Inverness and get inspired by the beauty of the Isle of Skye en route to the storied gothic streets of Edinburgh.

The Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain

City Hopping in Spain by Train

The first Spanish city to be added to Unesco’s Cities of Literature programme was Granada in Andalusia, most famous for the incredible Alhambra Palace Complex, which you’ll visit on day six of this odyssey through the heartlands of central and southern Spain. Part of what makes this city’s literary history so special is its cultural diversity. This region of Spain has a rich Moorish history and Granada was the birthplace of the great Islamic poet Ibn Zamrak, as well as later homing great writer’s of Catholic Spain, like Federico García Lorca and Ángel Ganivet. Other stops on this tour include Seville, which itself is home to several famous Spanish poets, and Malaga, where Ernest Hemingway is known to have frequented the bullring during his many travels in Andalusia.

Aerial shot of Reykjavík, capital city of Iceland

Volcanic Iceland

The majority of our five-day adventure-itinerary in Iceland lives up to how you probably imagine this otherworldly Nordic island, as we snowmobile across icy glaciers, soak in geothermal hot springs and get close to thundering waterfalls. However the capital, Reykjavik, was actually the fifth city inducted by Unesco as a City of Literature. This is largely because of the monumental Icelandic Sagas, which stand as one of the greatest examples of early medieval literature, with many grand themes of betrayal and power still prominent in modern storytelling. You’ll get a guided tour of this unique city, as well as the charming village of Reykholt, where legendary saga writer Snorri Sturluson lived and died nearly 800 years ago, having contributed significantly to key elements of Nordic mythology.

KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
